Recent critics have queried the chronology of Scott's account, uncovering compelling textual and circumstantial evidence that Scott was actively engaged with the novel over the period 1808-10 and, indeed, may not have begun work on it before that time (see the page for the relevant arguments). They have also questioned Scott's account (in the General Preface) of the literary influences that led him to resume his experiment with fiction. The debt that Scott acknowledges to Maria Edgeworth (portrayed, left) is unarguably genuine. The success of her novels of Irish manners such as and led Scott to believe that his countrymen might be presented to the English novel-reading public 'in a more favourable light than they had been placed hitherto, and tend to procure sympathy for their virtues and indulgence for their foibles.' Edgeworth would later become a valued correspondent of Scott and acute reader of his novels. While acknowledging Edgeworth's influence, however, Scott downplays that of other practitioners of the 'national tale' or novel of regional manners such as Lady Morgan, Jane Porter, and Elizabeth Hamilton. In so doing and in backdating the genesis of Waverley to 1805, Scott's first novel thus appears to pre-empt rather than respond to a literary mode.

According to Scott's account in the 'General Preface' to the 'Magnum Opus' edition of the Waverley Novels (questioned by some recent critics and biographers), the manuscript was mislaid during his move to in 1811. One day in autumn 1813, however, Scott claims to have come across the manuscript in a drawer while rummaging for fishing tackle. He reread it, was persuaded that it had potential, and resolved to complete it. He was bolstered in this resolution by the disappointing sales of his recent narrative poem and the pressing financial difficulties of 's publishing business, in which Scott was silent half-partner (see ). Consulted once again on the completion of the first volume, Will Erskine reversed his original opinion, and warmly encouraged Scott. The second and third volumes were completed in an extraordinary three-week burst in June 1814, and (with the subtitle updated to ''tis Years Since'), published on 7 July, a few weeks before Scott's forty-third birthday.

Webster defines love as “a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties

Perhaps that’s because all prison stories are figurative, at least to a degree. Whether the characters behind bars are cold-blooded killers or innocent victims of a malevolent authority, the movies, books, songs, and TV shows about them tend to be more about the common feeling of being trapped, and how people either make the best of a dire situation or attempt a daring escape. Albert S. Ruddy, who co-created Hogan’s Heroes with Bernard Fein—and later co-wrote one of the great prison films, —originally intended to set the sitcom in a regular American jail, but rewrote the script when he heard that NBC was developing a show called Campo 44, set in an Italian WWII POW camp. (The Campo 44 pilot was later burned off in a one-off broadcast in 1967, and was accused by TV critics of ripping off Hogan’s Heroes.) In an interview on the Hogan’s Heroes complete-series DVD set, Ruddy says that it took less than a day to remake the show as a WWII farce, because the core of the premise never changed: It was always about these clever fellows and how they lived like kings in some of the worst conditions imaginable. It’s such a powerful fantasy, this idea of being able to turn an armed fortress into a secret clubhouse.

Hogan, meanwhile, is delighted to learn that his contact is a beautiful woman (a twist that, according to Royce’s book, happened six times during the run of Hogan’s Heroes). Because of the elaborate network of tunnels and gadgets that the prisoners of Stalag 13 built, Hogan was able to come and go as he pleased from the camp; but always he had a job to do, which kept him from feeling “free” in the conventional sense. Hogan tries to enjoy his downtime with this lovely lady, Lily (Marlyn Mason), while they’re waiting for the rockets to show up. But duty keeps intervening, right up to the point when the launchers arrive and Hogan and Lily have to call in the location—at which point the episode cuts to grainy stock footage of bombers, as though the heroes had alerted Allied command to send a WWII movie in to save them.

What stories at their best can do is lead our desires in new
directions—away from greed, toward generosity; away from suspicion, toward sympathy; away
from an obsession with material goods, toward a concern for spiritual goods.
One of the spiritual goods I cherish is the peace of being at home, in family and neighborhood
and community and landscape.

Until the invention of writing,
the discoveries of the tribe were preserved and transmitted by storytellers, above all by elders.
“Under hunter-gatherer conditions,” Jared Diamond observes, “the knowledge possessed by even
one person over the age of 70 could spell the difference between survival and starvation for a
whole clan.”
Aware of time passing, however, we mourn things passing away, and we often fear the shape of
things to come.
